El Dusty | Cumbia City

ARTIST: El Dusty
TITLE: Cumbia City
LABEL: Aftercluv
Dusty Oliveira is a young DJ-producer from Corpus Christi, Texas with a fresh take on electro-cumbia. El Dusty started as a turntablist, the sampler is his primary instrument, and he shares the cut-paste-and-scratch esthetic of hip hop and house pioneers like Richard “Humpty” Vission, DJ Shadow and Dr. Dre. So his sound is somehow retro and futuristic at the same time, different from anything else I’ve heard in the electro-cumbia realm, and easy to recognize when you hear it. Take track 2 for example: a collaboration with Mexican-American rapper MLKMN and Dominican-American producer Happy Colors, it sounds like Run-DMC if they’d been into cumbia and trap. El Dusty loves his esoteric samples: 6 mashes up Los Telez’s Mexican cumbia romantica with the decidedly edgier current Puerto Rican band Los Chinchillos Del Caribe, and 9 turns Andres Landero’s cumbia classic into dancehall with killer toasting by Mexican reggae artist Jah Fabio. Other favorites are 4, a 3-minute party hosted by Los Masters Plus, and 5 with Cecy of Master Blaster Sound System, who has a similar sleepy flow as Bomba Estereo’s Li Samuet. This is the joint right here.
