Peregoyo Y Su Combo Vacana | Mi Buenaventura

ARTIST: Peregoyo Y Su Combo Vacana
TITLE: Mi Buenaventura
LABEL: Vampisoul
When you think of Colombian music, what comes to mind? Maybe cumbia, champeta and the other Afro-Colombian styles of the Caribbean coast. Or maybe salsa, since Cali is now arguably the world capital of that pan-Latin genre. But Colombia has a Pacific coast as well with its own African-derived musical tradition: currulao, played primarily on marimba and other percussion instruments. Peregoyo Y Su Combo Vacana, from Buenaventura on the Pacific coast, was the first Colombian orchestra to play currulao in a standard dance-band setup, arranging it for horns and rhythm section and programming it alongside cumbia, descarga, bomba and all the other hot tropical rhythms of the day. Discos Fuentes recorded Peregoyo’s band four times; this second session, from 1967, is perhaps the most iconic and has now been reissued by Vampisoul. Tracks 1 and 7 are the best examples here of uncut currulao, with their call-and-response vocals and syncopated rhythms that can be counted equally well in three and in four. Tracks 3 and 6 are what happens when you play cumbia in the manner of currulao – fascinating and slightly woozy.
