WRIR's Spring '11 Fund Drive gets underway on Friday at 5:00 PM. As usual, the Global A Go-Go program has the honor of kicking off the fund drive, and I'm excited that the band BALKANIZE! will perform in WRIR's Live Room beginning at about 5:30 PM.

BALKANIZE! is the only band that I know of in the Richmond region specializing in old-world Turko-Balkan folk music. They play songs and tunes from Romania, Bulgaria, all parts of the former Yugoslavia, Greece, Turkey and the entire region. If you haven't heard them yet, you're in for a treat -- they really cook. And if you like what you hear, they're playing next Friday at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts as well (see the flyer above). You can find out more about BALKANIZE! here:

Now in its seventh year of operations, WRIR is one of America's flagship low-power FM community radio stations. At WRIR we're proud to say that fully 70% of our annual budget comes from donations made by our stakeholders -- our listeners, our underwriters, our volunteers (some people are in two or three of those categories). Community radio is by definition listener-funded radio -- the only way we can focus on what you, the listener, really wants is for you, the listener, to be our primary source of funding.

Believe me, if large corporate interests or the government were where we got most of our funding from, WRIR would sound a lot different than it does now. I doubt we'd be running programs like Democracy Now! or Central Virginia Legal Aid Radio or The Rainbow Minute. And you can be damn sure we wouldn't be playing music from the Congo, Croatia, Colombia and Cambodia during drive-time!

So now is your time to say, "Yes, I want radio that isn't controlled by the same schmucks that want to control everything else." And the way to do that is by keeping your community radio station in the black and donating during WRIR's Spring '11 Fund Drive. Remember, a community isn't something you can just join or move into -- it's something you have to make.
