Program June 1, 2012

What's new in the world of world music this week is -- old.  I'll feature a bunch of reissues from all over the globe, with music influenced by American youth culture of the 60s and 70s, especially soul and psychedelic rock.

Leading off will be Turkey's underrated (so says Istanbulmusic.blogspot.com) Derdiyoklar Ikilisi (unfortunately they're just a duo -- the beardless young man is a rapturous fan).  I don't know much about the guy on the left (Ismail YK), but you won't be hearing him this week, or probably anytime soon, on Global A Go-Go.

I've really been enjoying the new album Prince Fatty Presents Hollie Cook In Dub (that's the Prince and Hollie pictured above) this week -- you'll hear a track on today's show, along with a couple of other dubwise recent releases.

Hollie Cook | Prince Fatty Presents Hollie Cook In Dub

ARTIST:  Hollie Cook
TITLE:  Prince Fatty Presents Hollie Cook In Dub
LABEL:  Mr Bongo
Hollie Cook’s self-titled debut, produced by Mike Pelanconi (aka Prince Fatty), was one of 2011’s feel-good pleasures.  They’re back together on an album of dub remixes, with most of the source tracks coming from that debut.

Seu Jorge (left) is probably best known to American audiences as Pele Dos Santos, the safety expert and one-man David Bowie tribute band in the film The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou.  Back home in Brazil, he's an extremely popular singer whose latest album may be his best yet -- you'll hear a track from it this week on Global A Go-Go.

Michael Pigott (left, with Carlos Ramirez Centeno, "el Patron de la Cumbia") is the inspiration and perspiration behind Masstropicas Records, an independent label that releases Peruvian chicha music on limited-edition vinyl.  This week on Global A Go-Go, we'll highlight Mike P's unique project by playing a set of tracks from his label, including a couple from his latest opus.

Happy Lucky Combo | Lucky Buddha

ARTIST:  Happy Lucky Combo
TITLE:  Lucky Buddha
LABEL:  self-released
Richmond’s Happy Lucky Combo is a think-globally, act-locally trio that started as a street band.  Nowadays drummer Pippin Barnett usually sits behind a full kit rather than marching with a snare, and bassist Dave Yohe plays an instrument that’s uniquely ill-equipped to be portable; accordionist Barry Bless continues to be fully mobile.

Ebo Taylor | Appia Kwa Bridge

ARTIST:  Ebo Taylor
TITLE:  Appia Kwa Bridge
LABEL:  Strut
If there was an African Music Hall of Fame, Ghana’s Ebo Taylor would get in on the first ballot.  As a singer, guitarist, composer, arranger, sideman, bandleader, producer, A&R man and educator, his work is a bridge between the colonial and independence eras, from highlife to Afrobeat and beyond.
