Musical chairs

WRIR's Fall 2023 Fund Drive is now underway -- we're working to raise $45,000 by Saturday October 28th to power "the tower of low power" in Richmond for another six months.  Thank you for your previous donations to Richmond Independent Radio and for your continuing support if you're a monthly donor!  I'm writing to encourage you to make a contribution once again this fall, if you can.  Become a monthly donor by clicking this link: https://bit.ly/3QnrP5H.  Or make a one-time donation to WRIR here: https://bit.ly/3FnagN1.

See that clever image up top?  I'm betting that you listen to more than a couple of those musical genres.  Me too.  At Richmond Independent Radio, you can hear virtually every one of those styles of music (and more) every week, with songs selected by music fans much like you, living right in your community, who have made themselves into experts and share their knowledge and enthusiasm with you for free.  Did I mention that every DJ you hear on WRIR is an unpaid volunteer?

Or you could listen to a commercial radio station that plays maybe two of those genres over and over again.  That's fine for an hour, but you'd better tune away after that before you start hearing the same songs over again!  Or you could let Spotify or Apple Music's artificial intelligence algorithms find you some tunes.  (Full disclosure: I'm a Spotify account holder as well.)  I don't know about you, but I'll take a WRIR DJ over an AI app any day of the week, and twice on Sundays.  (Especially on Sundays!)  BTW, a basic Richmond Independent Radio $11 monthly membership costs the same as a Spotify or Apple Music subscription.

And that's just WRIR's music shows.  Our news and public affairs programming provides information from the most local (fine-toothed coverage of Richmond's City Council and School Board) to the most global (Democracy Now reporting live from Gaza and Israel this week), covering subjects from race and gender to science and cooking to children's storytime and professional wrestling, providing points of view that are as broad as is our music programming.

Richmond Independent Radio does all of this 24 hours a day, 365 days a year with an all-volunteer staff of your neighbors who work every day to make our community a little bit smarter, a little bit more connected, a little bit more fulfilled, a little bit weirder.  WRIR is here for you -- and now's the time, just twice a year, when we need you to be here for us, by making a donation that helps keep this service available to all Richmonders, whether they can afford to donate or not.

On Global A Go-Go this week (Sunday October 22nd, 1:00-3:00 PM on WRIR, for two weeks afterwards at wrir.org/listen, check your local listings for airing on other radio stations, and any old time at my podcast site), you'll have the opportunity to double your contribution to Richmond Independent Radio, because I will personally match the first $500 of donations during my show.  I'll be continuing my Felabration theme this week -- I played two hours of Fela Kuti's music in honor of his 85th birthday on October 15th, this time it will be two hours of Afrobeat by artists from around the world.  So tune in for the music and fun even if you've already donated!

But there's no need to wait.  You can become a monthly supporter of WRIR right now by visiting https://bit.ly/3QnrP5H, or donate a one-time amount at https://bit.ly/3FnagN1.  Or simply go to our website at wrir.org make a donation and to find out more about the Fall 2023 Fund Drive and about the great community experiment called Richmond Independent Radio.  Thank you so much for your support in the past, and I hope WRIR can count on you once again in Fall 2023.   Long live Richmond Independent Radio!
