Richmond Independent Radio is volunteer-powered, listener-funded community radio -- we sometimes call ourselves "The Tower of Low Power," and we're an example of what a group of regular folks can accomplish when they have access to the public airwaves, access that's usually closely controlled by a small group of profit-seeking gatekeepers.
In an effort to squeeze more private profit out of the public airwaves, the gatekeepers have instead managed to squeeze out just about all of the local content that once existed. Wherever you go in the USA, you'll hear the same songs, the same news, the same shock jocks, the same talk show dittoheads. Radio is like those cellophane-wrapped tomatoes in the supermarket -- it's the same all over the country, and it all tastes like Styrofoam.
WRIR is different -- maybe better some times, maybe worse others, but by God are we different. We're folks just like you who create programming (music, news and public affairs) based on what we know, what inspires us, and what we think other people in our community would be interested in hearing. In addition, we carefully select programs from outside of Richmond that we think will resonate with WRIR's listeners.
If Richmond Independent Radio was a tomato, it'd be one you grew in your backyard. No, you're not going to get rich from growing it; no, you're can't export it to the rest of the world. But for something that can nourish and satisfy you and folks in your community, it can't be beat.
Even better, think of WRIR as artisinal radio: it's the farmers' market of the airwaves, broadcasting all kinds of freshly picked vegetables, bread right out of the oven, farm-fresh eggs, beer brewed right here in town. And just like your local growers and artisans, we need your support to make it happen.
And now is the time when your support is needed: every year we raise 80 percent of our $100,000 operating budget from folks like you. So if you supply the bread, we'll grow the tomatoes -- everybody will eat well.
