Dos Santos Anti-Beat Orquesta | Dos Santos

ARTIST: Dos Santos Anti-Beat Orquesta
TITLE: Dos Santos
LABEL: Alebrije
Dos Santos Anti-Beat Orquesta is a new five-piece combo from Chicago that plays cumbias and other Latin rhythms with the attack of rock ‘n’ roll. A three man rhythm section (bass guitar, trap kit and hand percussion) lays down the grooves; organ and electric guitar handle the tunes and turn in a series of tasty solos. The singing is mostly incidental – this is primarily an instrumental band. Much of the material nods toward the Peruvian psychedelic cumbia style called chicha: 3 and 10 are my favorites in this area. 1 and 2 are trippy numbers that start out kind of mellow, then spiral into psych guitar/organ workout. On these pieces, Dos Santos sounds like a forgotten, long-lost Latin American band from the 1970’s who were digging Santana (who wasn’t?) and American psych and garage rock while staying rooted in local traditions. Track 13 fast-forwards the band into the 21st century: it’s an outstanding nueva cumbia remix by two Chicago DJ’s, Sound Culture and Afroqbano. If you like Chicha Libre or Sonido Gallo Negro, check Dos Santos out as well – they’re working on a similar concept.
