Dubioza Kolektiv is a seven-piece rock band from Bosnia & Herzegovina whose sound incorporates elements of punk, metal, hip hop, electronica, ska and Balkan brass and beats. This is their seventh full-length album and the third to be distributed by Bill Gould (Faith No More bassist)’s Koolarrow label. There are a few bands around the world working in a similar space: Gogol Bordello, Firewater and Kultur Shock in the USA, Zdob Si Zdub from Moldova, Kal in Serbia are examples, and this album is as good as the best of any of those bands. Track 3 is the single: a catchy, sarcastic slice of turbo-folk about how music wants to be free. Manu Chao (an inspiration to all the bands listed above) makes a guest appearance on the politically-minded 6. 7 will remind you of Balkan Beat Box (BBB): funky rhythm, blaring horns, irreverent rapping. 8 has Zdob Si Zdub (ZSZ)’s metal-meets-Balkan brass attack, the hilarious 5 is an unlikely blend of BBB and ZSZ’s sounds, and 10 is a collaboration with Catalan ska-rumba band La Pegatina. If you’re a fan of any of the bands mentioned, don’t miss this excellent album, or their first-ever USA tour in 2016.
