Galactic | Carnivale Electricos

ARTIST:  Galactic
TITLE:  Carnivale Electricos
LABEL:  Anti-
REVIEW:  Galactic is a popular, difficult-to-categorize New Orleans-based instrumental band.  You could call them jazz, or jam-band, or funk – whatever you call them, they incorporate a wide variety of influences from hip-hop and electronica to world music to, especially, the indigenous sounds of their home city.
The band has been playing an all-night Lundi Gras gig for the last 15 years or so, and now they’ve made their idea of a Mardi Gras concept album.  There’s masked Indian chanting (track 1), marching band music (8), two dynamite tracks based on Brazilian music (another big carnival, don’t you know) (3 and 12), and a couple of veteran New Orleans rappers (7, unfortunately not FCC clean).  And they’ve given the Galactic sound to a cover of one of the all-time classic Mardi Gras songs, “Carnival Time,” featuring one-hit wonder Al “Carnival Time” Johnson on vocals.  It’s a party in a box – file it next to The Wild Tchoupitoulas and spin both of them regularly to cure what ails you.  And always, always let the good times roll.
