Program October 12, 2012

It's Richmond Folk Festival time once again (that's me and DJ Graybeard above, at the Festival a few years ago).  And that means it's time for another edition of Global A Go-Go's guide to the folk festival.

This year, I'm focusing in on four artists: Moroccan gnawa master Hassan Hakmoun and his band; Forro Pe De Ferra All Stars, playing accordion-driven forro music from northeast Brazil; Septeto Nacional De Ignacio Pineiro, who pioneered the Cuban son habanero style 80 years ago; and Fred Wesley & The New JB's, led by a man who can say he was literally present at the birth of funk.

You'll hear music from members of all four groups on this week's program, and some other tracks that fit right in.  And I played some Ethiopian azmari music last week in the style of Fendika -- don't miss them at the Folk Festival either.

I'm planning to see all five of them when I visit the Festival on Saturday.  Here's my itinerary so far:

12:00 - 12:45   Fendika at the Community Foundation Stage
12:45 - 01:45   Forro Pe De Serra All Stars at the Dominion Dance Pavilion
06:15 - 07:00   Septeto Nacional De Ignacio Pineira at the Dominion Dance Pavilion
07:15 - 08:15   Hassan Hakmoun at the Dominion Dance Pavilion
08:30 - 09:30   Fred Wesley & The New JB's at the Dominion Dance Pavilion

In between 1:45 and 6:15?  I'm playing it by ear -- I'm sure I'll find some more good music to check out.  See you there!
