Freedom And Rain, a 1990 collaboration between June Tabor and Oysterband, is in my opinion one of the finest British folk-rock recordings of all time, on par with the best work of Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span and Pentangle. 

Twenty-one years later (hey, what's the rush?), they've reunited to make a second recording together.  Ragged Kingdom comes out in September, and in the meantime we have a single that makes me very bullish on the full album's prospects.  You'll hear that single this week on Global A Go-Go.  Also this week: no one expects the Spanish Inquisition mariachi music; at the blues dance; and eskista music from Ethiopia.

With WRIR's Fall '11 Fund Drive coming up soon (September 16-25), I'm pleased to announce that I'll be hosting some fabulous live-in-the-studio performances.  Kicking off the fund drive on Friday Sep 16 will be a performance by the University of Richmond's Gamelan Raga Kusuma, playing Balinese gender wayang and belaganjur music.  On Friday Sep 23, Richmond's salsa machine Bio Ritmo returns to Global A Go-Go, premiering their brand-new album La Verdad.  And I'll be filling in for Charles Williams on The Other Black Music on Sunday Sep 18, where I'll be joined by Hotel X co-founder Tim Harding and his quartet.
