Program September 16, 2011

This week, Global A Go-Go has the honor of kicking off WRIR's Summer 2011 Fund Drive -- the drive starts on Friday September 16 at 5 PM and wraps up on Sunday September 25 at 3 PM. And I'll be joined this week by the University of Richmond's Gamelan Raga Kusuma, who will play Balinese beleganjur and gender wayang music live in our studios.

The fund drive is nine days (minus two hours) of fabulous premiums, music performed live in the studio, free food and CDs for everyone who donates in person, and general mayhem and merriment.  It's also the time when your favorite Richmond Independent Radio personalities take to the microphone with a simple question for you: How valuable is WRIR to your community?

The music you'd never hear on any other radio station -- Amy Goodman and Democracy Now! -- the locally produced talk programs and coverage of local issues -- NPR shows like Talk Of The Nation that went unaired until WRIR began in 2005 -- knowledgeable, articulate DJs -- 24/7/365 service to the community -- free public service announcements for not-for-profit community events -- a radio station that can never be bought by Clear Channel -- a station staffed by regular folks just like you, all 150 of whom donate their time -- a webstream that lets you listen even if you're out of antenna range.  How valuable are all those things?

If they're important to you, if they represent the kind of community you want to live in, then now is the time to vote for people-powered radio by making a donation during WRIR's Summer 2011 Fund Drive.  Please consider doing so by calling 804-622-9747 or visiting us at 1621-B West Broad Street during the drive, or by clicking here to donate online:

Agreed -- did I point out that the live music engineer for this broadcast and podcast was Allan Coberly? And he'll be back with me this week for Bio Ritmo, live in the studio on Friday Sep 23 at 5 PM.
