TITLE: The Rough Guide To Cumbia (2nd edition)
LABEL: World Music Network
Ten years ago, collections like Nigeria 70 were turning legions of music fans onto the glories of Nigerian music. Today, Colombia is the new Nigeria – in the last year there have been a few fabulous compilations shedding new light on the tremendous variety and wealth of Colombian historic recordings. Now, you can add this collection to the list. Compiler Pablo (DJ Bongohead) Iglesias has done a great job digging, researching and writing about this well-curated selection of tracks from the 1940s to the day before yesterday. You get everything from classic big-band porro (track 2) to a psychedelia-laced take on the same (4); from an urbanized cumbia-salsa hybrid (9) to vallenato, Colombia’s country music (15, with yodeling!). And there’s a look beyond Colombia’s border to contemporary chicha from Peru (16) and hip-hop/electronica-influenced nueva cumbia from Argentina (18). We are now officially in the golden age of Colombia reissues, thanks to Soundway’s The Original Sound Of Cumbia, Analog Africa’s Diablos Del Ritmo and this fine collection.
