Chicha Libre is back with a 4-song EP for Record Store Day (the vinyl edition will be released on April 20, the download is available beginning on April 2). Cuatro Tigres includes four covers of four very different songs, with each getting the band’s Peruvian-psychedelic treatment. Track 1 is one of the most beloved songs from the Clash’s London Calling album; 2 is from the catalog of Los Shapis, one of chicha’s most popular bands. Track 3, a classic by Arthur Lee’s Love, is also the subject of a an excellent cover by another unique Latin-rock hybrid band, Calexico. And 4 makes sense if you know that The Simpsons creator Matt Groening is a huge fan of Chicha Libre. The band’s patented clip-clop-clip groove, twanguero guitars, lysergically swirling keyboards (courtesy of ex-Richmonder Joshua Camp) and tongue-in-cheek humor are all here in spades. Recommended for fans, new acquaintances, and really just about anybody with a good sense of fun.
