Program March 15, 2013

WRIR is just past the midpoint of its Spring '13 Fund Drive, and I want to thank the more than 200 people who have already donated in the current drive.  If you haven't yet donated, we can really use your support right now to keep this unique radio station, one of the finest not only in Richmond but anywhere in the country, firing on all cylinders.

Our goal is to raise $40,000 (1/3rd of our 2013 budget) by Tuesday -- please help us get there by donating what you can sometime in the next five days.  You can donate by calling us at 804-622-9747 any time (we're here making great radio for you 24 hours a day, 365 days a year), by visiting us in person at 1621-B West Broad Street in Richmond between 9 AM and 9 PM, or by clicking the "Donate" button at www.wrir.org or this link:

I have a very special program planned this week that highlights the power of Richmond Independent Radio to amplify the activities of people in our community.  WRIR's listeners know Carl Hamm (pictured above right, with Malaysian singer Zam Zam) as DJ Carlito, host of "If Music Could Talk" every Sunday night at 7; you might also know about the Bollywood and K-Pop dance nights he hosts in venues around Richmond.  Carl is an avid collector of musical recordings from all over the world, and especially of the sounds of Asia.

Now Carl has added "record producer" to his resume: he's the researcher and compiler of Pop Yeh Yeh, an album of garage and psychedelic rock from Singapore and Malaysia that has just been released by Sublime Frequencies Records.  Carl will be my guest in the studio this week -- we'll talk about the Pop Yeh Yeh project, how it came about and how it's changed his life.  Of course, we'll play music from the new album and from Carl's personal collection of rare Malaysian and Singaporean recordings.

Tune in if you can -- it's going to be a great program, the kind of thing you'll only hear on WRIR.  Thank you again for your support of Richmond Independent Radio and Global A Go-Go, and please consider making a donation to the Spring '13 Fund Drive.
