Two Niles To Sing A Melody: The Guitars And Synths Of Sudan

ARTIST: various artists
TITLE: Two Niles To Sing A Melody: The Violins And Synths Of Sudan
LABEL: Ostinato
Once upon a time, there was a golden age of pop music in Sudan. It was the years between 1969, when Gafaar Nimeiry came to power, and 1983, when Nimeiry’s government swung from socialism to Islamism and imposed Sharia law, which essentially made music illegal.

Program August 8, 2018

Red Baraat (pictured above) is a living embodiment of Duke Ellington's notion that the best music is "beyond category."  They're inspired by Indian bhangra and brass bands; their music also incorporates funk, go-go, rock and jazz.

They're one of the most exciting live acts anywhere, which you'll be able to see for yourself when  Red Baraat plays the Richmond Jazz Festival on Sunday evening and a Plan 9 Records in-store that afternoon.  Their latest album, Sound The People, was released in June, and you'll hear a track from it this week on Global A Go-Go.

Also this week: one from Ladysmith Black Mambazo, who will also be at the Richmond Jazz Fest; a reggae set including my all-time favorite song about road kill; two cuts from Ostinato Records' current Sudanese projects; and Balkan brass that matches Red Baraat's white-hot energy.

Program August 1, 2018

We're celebrating the birthday of the Republic of Benin on this week's edition of Global A Go-Go.  The little West African country formerly known as Dahomey has long punched above its weight in the world of music.  You'll hear the most famous Beninoise musicians -- Angelique Kidjo, Gnonnas Pedro, Orchestre Poly-Rythmo -- and we'll dig deep for regional and local favorites as well.

Also this week: four modern sides cut at Havana's Estudio Areito, plus some unlikely cumbia covers of rap and metal.

Program July 18, 2018

July 18, 2018 is the 100th anniversary of Nelson Mandela's birth.  And July 18 every year is Nelson Mandela International Day, when all are encouraged to remember this piece of his wisdom: "What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived.  It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead."  Learn more about the Mandela Day movement here: https://www.mandeladay.com.

In this week's first hour, Global A Go-Go celebrates his life and legacy with songs about Nelson Mandela from South Africa and around the world.  And in our second hour, I'm joined by my new colleague Jennifer, who'll be premiering her new program of French-language music later this summer.  She'll spin some reggae en Francais and Ivoirian coupe decale for your listening and dancing pleasure.

Program July 11, 2018

July 11 is the 71st birthday of the late John Holt (pictured above in a painting by Oliver Martin), one of my favorite reggae singers.  We'll celebrate with five selections from the man who was the prototype for lovers rock.

And July 11 is also the 37th birthday of Richmond's Plan 9 Records.  We'll celebrate that one by giving away a $37 Plan 9 gift certificate during Global A Go-Go to a caller who can correctly answer any one of these Plan 9 trivia questions (answers added after the contest ended; congratulations to our winner, David):

• How did Plan 9 Records get its name?  From "Plan 9 From Outer Space," frequently cited as the worst movie ever made.
• What was the address of Plan 9's first location?  2905 W. Cary Street, today the left side of Citizen Burger Bar.
• What infamous Richmond city councilman endorsed Plan 9 in a TV advertisement?  H.W. (Chuck) Richardson, who would subsequently be arrested for heroin distribution while serving on City Council.
• What legendary Richmond band was fronted by long-time Plan 9 employee Bob Schick?  The mighty post-punk band Honor Role, Richmond's analogue to Fugazi, the Minutemen and Husker Du.
• What radio station had Plan 9 as its landlord?  Channel 36 / Color Radio, the radio station that "broadcast" on the last channel of Richmond's brand new cable TV system starting in 1982; their motto was "Better radio through television."

Also on this week's program: new music by Bombino, who'll perform in DC on July 12; Sudan's irresistible dance music; and some Afro-funk deep cuts.

Program July 4, 2018

I'm the grandson of immigrants from one of the sh*thole countries of the early 20th century: Italy.  For my grandparents, the 4th of July was the best holiday of the year.  That was the day they celebrated the nation that took them in, let them make something of themselves, and gave their children and grandchildren the opportunities their homeland couldn't provide.

It seems like a lot of Americans have lost touch with their immigrant roots, or maybe they're just in denial.  As a public service to the many Americans who've forgotten that their families too were immigrants, this special 4th of July edition of Global A Go-Go will feature two hours of great American music made by people who chose to come to this country.  These are the people, like my grandparents, who have made America great always.  Today's the right day to celebrate them, and us.
