Looking for the best party band in the world? These guys would be on the short list of contenders. Chico Trujillo is a cumbia band from Chile that started in 1999 on a lark, a side project of the ska-punk band La Floripondio. On their sixth studio album (not surprisingly, there are two live albums as well) they’ve invited the 30-piece brass Banda Wiricocha to collaborate. This kicks Chico Trujillo’s usually raucous sound up to another level of insanity – check out the title track (9) and the introduction to 2 for examples. The best use of Wiricocha might be 6, where they echo a melody introduced by an Andean panpipe group – the effect is spine-tingling, it’s a shame the song is only two minutes long. Track 7 is something completely different – a norteno number that could have been cut by the Sir Douglas Quintet, featuring some sharp rapping by Chilean-American hip hop group Rebel Diaz. 8 is a lovely, moody cumbia fronted by Argentine-American singer Kevin Johansen. And 4 is the classic Chico Trujillo tear-the-house-down cumbia sound, one of their best tunes ever. This short album will leave you grinning from ear to ear.
